Disney criticized Florida Republicans for passing legislation that discriminates against the LGBTQ community, so they are retaliating by revoking Disney World’s special district status.
Florida Republicans passed the ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill under the guise of “parental rights” to stop schools from teaching kids about diversity, sexuality, and gender. Some even went so far as to falsely accuse gay people of being “groomers” and “pedophiles” to justify the vote.
Disney took heat for failing to speak out, but after the company finally did, Republicans went full snowflake and vowed retaliation for exercising free speech they don’t like.
And so, Florida Republicans jammed a bill through the state House and Senate revoking Disney’s special district status that basically allows the company to self-govern the district in which they operate several theme parks, restaurants, hotels, transportation, and other amenities. The result is why Disney World is often referred to as the “happiest place on Earth.”
But now it looks like this status will be revoked all because the company dared to speak out against hate and discrimination. And it’s going to have the effect of hurting Florida residents who live in the area.
In fact, it appears taxpayers will be on the hook for $1 billion worth of debt and will have their tax bill raised to around $2,000 per household to pay for things that Disney had previously paid for.
Of course, we can’t forget that Republicans used to be all in favor of corporations having free speech protection. After all, they made the case in Citizens United that corporations are people who are protected by the Constitution. Clearly, Republicans only approve of speech that supports their agenda and will punish any corporation or business that disagrees with them. That makes them a threat to business and the Constitution.
How can any corporation support Republicans now? This retaliatory effort should backfire against them. Corporations should retaliate against Republicans by refusing to donate money to the party. They should also put their power to use by backing Democrats to win elections.
Twitter users slammed Florida Republicans for targeting Disney.
.@Disney should leave Florida.

The most important issue to Republicans is destroying Disney because the company won’t discriminate against gay people.
Just chew on that for a minute. https://t.co/yPSqB4Pjws

Disney should announce that when DeSantis signs the anti-Disney bill into law, it will end its Florida Resident discount for theme parks and that families in Orange & Osceola counties will see their tax bills surge.
Disney should know by now you can’t compromise with fascists.

Disney’s special district pays for its own services, so removing this status means FL residents will see a higher tax bill. The district also has over $1 billion in debt, which the state would be on the hook for. Florida will go broke to own the libs. 🤡 pic.twitter.com/cAEr3OLOsE

Who else would like to see Disney tell DeSantis to go fuck himself and move Disney World to a different state?

All Disney would need to do to destroy Ron De Santis is announce that due to the current climate in Florida they will be reviewing whether to continue operations in the state with a decision by early next year.
Zero chance De Santis wins re-election if it risks Disney leaving.

Real cancel culture is Ron DeSantis and GQP Republicans stripping the special tax status away from Disney in retaliation of them criticizing the bigoted Don’t Say Gay bill.
This should be a warning to any and all companies who want to donate to fascist seditionists.

Disney and other corporations should retaliate against the GOP across the nation. If Republicans are willing to punish Disney for simply opposing a law they passed, it won’t be long before Republicans do more of the same to silence anyone who disagrees with them. A stand needs to be taken and that means Republicans need to lose elections.
