It was never about state’s rights. It was always about imposing their dogmatic authoritarian agenda upon the entire nation according to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), who said his party will pursue a national abortion ban if they retake Congress in November.

On Monday, privacy and abortion rights came to the forefront ahead of the midterm election when a leaked majority opinion written by Justice Samuel Alito made it clear that the Supreme Court intends to overturn Roe v Wade based on personal ideology and flimsy legal arguments. Should that come to pass, millions of women across the country would lose their right to choose and would be an oppressed class of Americans.

The loss of these rights would be immediately felt in red states, where Republicans are already passing abortion bans in anticipation of the ruling, which would be a 5-4 ruling to overturn a 7-2 ruling.

Part of the Republican argument has been that it should be left to the states to decide. But McConnell, who corruptly engineered the GOP takeover of the high court, is admitting that his party will seek to pass a national abortion ban if they take over Congress.

“It would depend on where the votes were,” McConnell said according to USA Today. “With regard to the abortion issue, I think it’s pretty clear where Senate Republicans stand. And if and when the court makes a final decision, I expect everybody will be more definitive. But I don’t think it’s much secret where Senator Republicans stand on that issue.”

That could very well mean that McConnell intends to kill the filibuster since it’s unlikely he would have 60 votes to pass any such bill.

Again, it was never about state’s rights. Republicans were always intending to pursue a national abortion ban, the kind of big government move that they frequently claim to oppose. Republicans literally want to regulate women’s uteruses. And it won’t stop there. You can bet that Republicans will criminalize women traveling across state lines to seek abortion care, which means police will be required to stop female drivers and interrogate them. Instead of checking to see if they’ve been drinking and driving, they’ll force them to take a pregnancy test. Then they will prevent them from crossing state lines or monitor that woman when she gets back to make sure she is still pregnant. If not, she’ll be imprisoned or executed.

Even legal contraception is not safe from Republican authoritarianism. Americans need to stop believing that Republicans are for small government and freedom because they are most certainly not. They never have been. Mitch McConnell just admitted it. This next election needs to be a landslide victory for Democrats in November. Because when Republicans are done obliterating the privacy and freedom of women, they will find other people to persecute. The GOP’s existence as a viable political party must come to an end, or else they’ll put an end to our Constitution.
