Conservative attorney George Conway hammered Donald Trump on Saturday for engaging in witness tampering during a speech at the Faith and Freedom Conference on Friday.

As the House January 6th Committee continues to make their case against Trump and his inner circle in public hearings to unpack the evidence and testimony to the American people, Trump dangled the possibility of pardons to those who participated in the Capitol insurrection as the committee gears up to hear public testimony from former Trump aides.

To Conway, Trump’s offer of pardons is a scheme to persuade witnesses from cooperating.

“Someone should tell him that he has the right to remain silent and anything he says can and will be used against him in a court of law,” Conway told host Katie Phang on MSNBC. “From a prosecutor’s standpoint, just let him keep talking. He is basically still admitting that he put pressure on Mike Pence to do something that was completely illegal. Frankly, although he is not president, if he was president he would be doing what he did a few years ago like dangling pardons to people.”

“I do not think he’s ever going to get elected president again,” Conway continued. “It’s an attempt at witness tampering frankly, a little bit.”

“Yeah, he is dangling the opportunity for people to not cooperate, to not testify, to be able to get a pardon,” Phang noted.

Conway then slammed the Faith and Freedom Conference for giving Trump a standing ovation.

“It kills me,” Conway said. “He is doing this in front of the Faith and Freedom conference. The guy who paid $130,000 to Stormy Daniels and to end democracy is at the Faith and Freedom conference getting a standing ovation. I cannot take it.”

Indeed, Trump’s lies and behavior are the opposite of what true Christians practice, yet evangelicals adore Trump. He should not have even been invited to speak at the conference. What this crowd cheered on Friday was an assault on democracy and a stain on basic human decency.

This isn’t the first time Trump has offered pardons to the insurrectionists either. It’s like he’s telling his supporters that they should do whatever it takes to put him back in power, even illegal activities, and they will get away with it. Trump belongs in prison so he can no longer threaten this nation. The DOJ has enough evidence to prosecute him and it’s long past time they do it.
