In a joint statement released by 11 Republican senators on Saturday, the group announced they will object to the certification of the election results in a seditious scheme to keep outgoing President Donald Trump in power.

Senator Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) kicked off the sedition earlier this week when he joined the 140 House Republicans who plan to turn a simple procedural vote into a complete clusterf*ck on January 6th when Congress convenes to certify the election results.

The vote really should just be routine since President-Elect Joe Biden won the popular vote by 7 million votes and the Electoral College vote 306 to 232. In addition, Trump and his supporters have repeatedly failed to produce any evidence of election fraud, resulting in around 60 losses in court. Recounts in the battleground states Biden won have only confirmed his victory over and over again as experts debunk multiple fraud allegations.

Despite the clear fact that Biden won, now Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) is joining Hawley along with ten other Republicans, including Sens. Ron Johnson (R-Wisc.), James Lankford (R-Okla.), Steve Daines (R-Mont.), John Kennedy (R-La.), Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), and Mike Braun (R-Ind.), as well as Sens.-elect Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.), Roger Marshall (R-Kan.), Bill Hagerty (R-Tenn.) and Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), and released a statement announcing their intention and their demands.

“Congress should immediately appoint an Electoral Commission, with full investigatory and fact-finding authority, to conduct an emergency 10-day audit of the election returns in the disputed states,” the statement said. “Once completed, individual states would evaluate the Commission’s findings and could convene a special legislative session to certify a change in their vote, if needed. Accordingly, we intend to vote on Jan. 6 to reject the electors from disputed states as not ‘regularly given’ and ‘lawfully certified’ (the statutory requisite), unless and until that emergency 10-day audit is completed.”

Of course, all of the Electoral College electors have been legally certified. Biden won. His margin of victory eclipses Trump’s win over Hillary Clinton in 2016. This Republican scheme is nothing more than an attempted coup that should be severely punished by every lawmaker who cares about democracy and the Constitution. It’s an unprecedented attack that has no evidence to justify it. And what they are doing is inciting violence from Trump supporters on January 6th.

Americans reacted to the announcement with swift condemnation.

There is no longer any choice. Trump and his Republican supporters must be arrested and prosecuted for sedition against the United States.
