President Joe Biden offered the nation a compassionate recognition of the Americans who have died from the coronavirus in the wake of the death toll reaching 500,000.

It has been a year since the pandemic began spreading in our country. As we all know, disgraced former President Donald Trump referred to the virus as a “hoax” and not only refused to do what needed to be done to stop the spread, he made things worse by demonizing the wearing of masks, attacking health experts, preventing protective gear from reaching locations most in need, and downplayed the danger over and over again.

It should also be pointed out that Trump mostly ignored the death toll, even making flippant and insulting remarks such as “It is what it is” and even denying that the death toll was accurate.

More than 400,000 Americans died by the time Trump left office on January 20th. Since then, his failure to meet the crisis has resulted in an additional 100,000 deaths. And he is still silent about the victims.

Well, Biden not only empathized with Americans who have lost loved ones, he honored the victims and offered the country hope during a ceremony at the White House on Monday.

“The people we lost were extraordinary. They spanned generations,” he said. “Just like that, they took their final breath alone, in America. For the loved ones left behind: I know all too well. I know what it’s like to not be there when it happens. I know what it’s like when you are there holding their hands, there’s a look in their eye and they slip away.”

Indeed, Biden lost his first wife and a child to a car accident decades ago, a painful loss he still feels to this day.

“I ask all Americans to remember, remember those we lost and those they left behind,” Biden continued. “I also ask us to act, to remain vigilant, to say socially distant, to mask up, to get vaccinated.””We will get through this, I promise you. We ask you to join us to remember. So we can heal. To find purpose, and the work ahead to show that there is light in the darkness. This nation will smile again. This nation will know sunny days again. This nation will know joy again.”

He urged Americans to never forget because we can’t allow something like this to happen ever again.

“As a nation we cannot and must not let this go on,” he said. “We must end the politics and disinformation that’s divided families, communities. We have to fight this together as one people, as the United States of America.”

Trump is incapable of making statements such as the one Biden delivered during this ceremony. When Trump’s brother died last year, he was on the golf course instead of at the hospital. Trump didn’t care about how many Americans were dying. He only cared about staying in power and making himself and his family richer. He refused to listen to science and our country has paid a heavy price in lives.

Biden is doing what Trump should have done and was incapable of doing. That’s what makes Biden the right person in the White House right now. If only he could have been in office a year earlier.
