Now that Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has made it official that she will indeed create a House select committee to study what transpired on January 6 when thousands of pro-Trump rioters stormed the U.S. Capitol, some Democrats are warning that House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) may appoint loose cannons such as Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) or Lauren Boebert (R-CO) a way of “bending the knee” for former President Donald Trump.
According to Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), who appeared on MSNBC Friday evening, nothing McCarthy or others in the GOP do would surprise him in the least:
“You know, wouldn’t shock me if he chose Jim Jordan and Marjorie Taylor Greene, Lauren Boebert.
“He’s got quite a collection of characters to choose from. It’s not my expectation, given Kevin McCarthy’s past practice, that he will do anything other than bend the knee to Donald Trump.”
Jeffries added that Trump will probably tell McCarthy who he wants on the select committee:
“In fact, we probably can expect that Donald Trump, over the next-few days, will issue recommendations as to who he thinks should be on this committee and Kevin McCarthy will follow those recommendations, hook, line, and sinker. But that’s not going to stop us from uncovering the truth.”
Having Greene, Boebert, or Jordan on the committee would indeed undermine the integrity and seriousness of the investigation that is about to be undertaken by the House select committee. But that’s exactly what Republicans want: To obfuscate the real issues and pretend that no one is responsible for what happened that fateful day on Capitol Hill.
If indeed McCarthy decides to appoint a member of his clown caucus to the Jan. 6 committee, we can always hope the chairperson will keep a tight rein on them. The last thing we need is more lies and BS from the GOP.
