Proving yet again that Republicans will beat anything to death for political advantage, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) has introduced a piece of legislation that would prohibit the teaching of any U.S. history which involves the subject of slavery, meaning that some amendments to the Constitution would no longer be taught to students in public schools.

According to the Washington Examiner, Cruz’s bill would cut off all federal funding to any entity which dared to broach the topic of slavery and race:

“The federal government has no right to force a political agenda onto Americans, especially one that aims to tear down our institutions and divide us based on race,” the Texas Republican said in a statement about the bill, which has been dubbed the END CRT Act.

Cruz went on to refer to critical race theory, which teaches that the United States is inherently racist and has been adopted by companies and school districts across the country, as “Marxist ideology that sees the world as a battle, not between the classes — as classical Marxism does — but between the races.”

Specifically, teaching the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments would be off-limits to teachers:

  • The 13th Amendment ended slavery in the United States
  • The 14th Amendment granted citizenship to all people born in or naturalized in the U.S., including former slaves
  • The 15th Amendment made it illegal to deny anyone the right to vote based on “race, color, or previous condition of servitude.”

Of course, Cruz’s idiotic legislation will never reach the Senate floor for debate or a vote, but it allows him to grandstand on an issue that Republican presidential contenders clearly intend to make a major issue in the 2024 race for the White House.
