In yet another ridiculous defense of the Trump supporters who violently stormed the Capitol in a failed attempt to overthrow democracy, Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) claimed on the House floor Friday that they are being treated worse than prisoners in Guantanamo Bay.

Seriously.

Approximately 650 Trump supporters sought to effect a coup in this country to install Donald Trump as a dictator, a seditious and treasonous effort that included a plan to assassinate lawmakers and former Vice President Mike Pence.

Many of the perpetrators of the insurrection attempt are awaiting trial in jail, and rightfully so. But Gohmert objected to this and absurdly claimed that they are being treated worse than prisoners at the United States military prison in Guantanamo Bay.

“The reports we’ve been getting indicate that the folks here that are being held in pre-trial confinement and are being punished, although that’s unconstitutional to punish somebody while they are awaiting trial and have not been convicted, that they’re not treated nearly as well as bloodthirsty murderers that are being held in Guantanamo,” Gohmert said, going on to say that it’s “tragic that American citizens are being treated so much worse than individuals who want to destroy America.”

Here’s the video via Twitter:

The problem is that prisoners at Guantanamo Bay are STILL awaiting trial after several years despite not being charged or convicted of any crime and some were brutally tortured during the George W. Bush administration. The torture included sleep deprivation, waterboarding, deafening noise, sexual humiliation, beatings, and being locked in cold cells. None of this has happened to any of the insurrectionists.

One of Gohmert’s main complaints, meanwhile, is that the January 6th insurrectionists are supposedly not being allowed to shave, not that many of them bothered to shave prior to their attempt to overthrow the Constitution.

It’s false to compare the insurrectionists to the Guantanamo Bay detainees. After all, some of the detainees are likely innocent. Trump supporters committed acts of terrorism and treason against their own country. The fact that Gohmert continues to defend them makes him one of them.

Twitter users took him to the woodshed.

Frankly, the January 6th terrorists and any Republican lawmaker who aided or continues to aid them should spend the rest of their lives in prison.
